The book is from the 1930s and it’s taken 80 years to waddle its way onto the big screen. I remember reading Mr. Poppers Penguins as a kid, though I can’t say I’m blown away by the concept being adapted into film. Yes, penguins are inherently hilarious as proven by HAPPY FEET and SURFS UP, but what about when they don’t talk? Wait, they don’t talk do they? No? Thank god.
USA Today has the first shots of Jim Carrey and the titular penguins from the film dicking around in his house. The penguins being used are real, which is leagues better than crafting them out of goofy CGI.
Rather than rely strictly on CGI, Waters and his production team opted to use actual penguins. They settled on Gentoo penguins from a zoo in Montreal. Gentoos are close in height and build to the Emperor penguins that marched into moviegoers’ hearts a few years ago.
With the help of a cadre of “amazing” animal trainers and a steady supply of fish, the Gentoos were soon figuring out how to hit their assigned places on the set.
