Deadline.com reports that Fox 2000 has purchased Peter Dowling’s spec script HIGHRISE, which they are calling “a lush 21st century thriller inspired by the 1960’s classic, The Collector.” No director has been attached yet.

Written by John Fowles and published in 1963, THE COLLECTOR goes like this:

This tale of obsessive love–the story of a lonely clerk who collects butterflies and of the beautiful young art student who is his ultimate quarry–remains unparalleled in its power to startle and mesmerize.

Based on how Deadline is phrasing it, HIGHRISE isn’t a straight-up adaptation of THE COLLECTOR, but if we’re being honest with ourselves, we can probably assume it’s going to have a plotlike exactly like the above one.

William Wyler made a movie of the Fowles’ book in 1965 starring Terrence Stamp and Samantha Eggar.
