So I don't know that much about the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering. I played a Marvel version for a while in middle school, and my brother use to play quite a bit, but I'm really not that familiar with the game. It was just something I never got into. But a movie based on the game? That could be interesting.
THR has learned Fox has acquired the film rights for Magic: The Gathering, and Simon Kinberg has been tapped to produce. Kinberg is also building a comic book movie universe for Fox, and is working on a few other projects, so he's going to be one very busy dude. THR says Fox hopes to launch a new movie franchise with MAGIC: THE GATHERING, and they want it to be as big as the HARRY POTTER and LORD OF THE RINGS films.
A movie version of Magic: The Gathering could be great, however I think Fox is aiming a little too high by comparing it to HARRY POTTER and LORD OF THE RINGS. I know plenty of people still play Magic, and most people are probably aware of the game, but I don't think it has had the same mainstream success lately as the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings books. I have the same feeling about Duncan Jones' WARCRAFT movie: most people probably know the name, but they don't know anything about the game.
