Francis Ford Coppola Backs Martin Scorsese’s Stance against Marvel

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Even though it shouldn't come as a great shock to the cinematic world, Francis Ford Coppola agrees with his paesan, Martin Scorsese, that Marvel films are not cinema. In fact, Mr. Coppola went a step further, calling the MCU "despicable" while speaking to journalists in Lyon, France after receiving the Prix Lumiere award. "When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration," he is quoted as saying.

Now, there's no doubt that Mr. Scorsese is a master filmmaker and Coppola has THE GODFATHER, but with Scorsese being 76 and Coppoloa being 80, this kind of feels like a "grumpy old men" scenario. Get off my lawn, superheroes! I thought movies were supposed to be subjective. Cinema is about entertainment and moviegoers can find their enjoyment AND enlightenment in anything they choose! Also, Coppola may be backing the brilliant Martin Scorsese here, but chew on this for a moment: Coppola also backed convicted pedophile, Victor Salva, when he executive produced the first two JEEPERS CREEPERS movies. I wonder what Captain America has to say about that?
