Freddy vs. Jason screenwriters head to space for Starship Troopers reboot

Columbia Pictures is shooting for the stars, announcing their intention to reboot Paul Verhoeven's 1997 sci-fi epic STARSHIP TROOPERS, with the intention of getting another franchise going. This is one of the younger properties getting the reboot treatment, although next year it will be 20 years old.

Attached to pen the new film are Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, on the strength of their work on the upcoming reboot BAYWATCH, though they're certainly no strangers to reimagining classic properties, having written both FREDDY VS. JASON and the 2009 FRIDAY THE 13TH remake.

Reportedly, they will be returning to the film's roots, adapting directly from the source, Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel, rather than the film itself. Here's the plot:

In the distant future, the Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. But there was a time before the war… A Mobile Infantry travels to distant alien planets to take the war to the Bugs. They are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: Survival of their species no matter what the cost…

Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing. More on this story as it breaks!
