If you were like me, and you liked horror at an early age (and you were lucky enough to live in Canada or had cable), then this is right up your alley.
Way back when, there was a show on TV called THE HILARIOUS HOUSE OF FRIGHTENSTEIN, which was directed by Riff Markowitz that ran for 130 episodes beginning in 1971. The show starred Billy Van as Count Frightenstein, and featured a bunch of other creepy/funny characters in sketches combining humor with education (think Sesame Street, but with more vampires and a werewolf). Heck, Markowitz even got Vincent Price to star (yes, THE Vincent Price). Price served as the narrator and read intentionally goofy poetry and closed each show by saying, “When next we meet in Frankenstone, don’t come alone.” The show garnered quite the cult following, and recently had its first convention in Toronto this past May.
I was fortunate to be able to watch the show’s reruns every Saturday morning. Sure, it was dated, but it was a fun ride. Well, someone over at Empire Pictures thought so too, because they’ve decided to release the show on DVD through its Home Entertainment division on October 18th. FRIGHTENSTEIN will be represented by four of its best episodes on the first DVD, which has a retail price of $14.98. Another disc will be issued in the first quarter of 2006, with more to come thereafter. No word on what episodes will be included, or the specs for that matter, but that should be revealed in due time.
