Gary Oldman is a living legend, but he didn't win an Oscar for one of his performances until earlier this year, when he took home a statue for playing Winston Churchill in director Joe Wright's historical drama DARKEST HOUR. It makes sense, then, that Oldman and Wright are going to continue their working relationship with Wright's new film, the thriller THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW.
Based on a novel by A.J. Finn, THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW is the latest variation on the concept Alfred Hitchcock so masterfully brought to the screen with his movie REAR WINDOW, the idea of a person witnessing a crime from the safety of their own home.
Amy Adams stars in this one as a
child psychologist with severe agoraphobia (and a penchant for mixing alcohol with her medication) who hasn’t left her house in months. The woman witnesses a horrible crime involving a new neighboring family but no one, including the police, will believe her. And she has doubts herself.
Oldman will be playing the father of that neighboring family, while Julianne Moore is signed to play "the mother of a mysterious young boy who moves in across the street."
BUG and KILLER JOE playwright Tracy Letts wrote the screenplay adaptation. THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW is being produced by Scott Rudin and Eli Bush for Fox 2000.
The REAR WINDOW set-up is a great one, so it's easy to understand why it keeps being used. With so much top-notch talent involved, THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW is likely to be one of the better versions of the concept.
