Gattaca TV series?

JoBloJoBlo

Buried at the end of a Variety article about Denis Leary’s Apostle Films production company, their next project is briefly mentioned, which just so happens to be a TV series based on the movie GATTACA.

Next up, the company has secured the rights to the feature film “Gattica,” [sic] which they plan to develop as a one-hour police procedural set in the future. The “Gattica” smallscreen adaptation will be written by Gil Grant and is being developed through Sony TV’s international division.

The 1997 movie (spelled GATTACA, Variety) starred Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and Uma Thurman and discussed such deep scientific and moral issues as genetic discrimination and the building of “superhumans” through the altering of DNA. I love the original film, but I’m skeptical about it being turned into a “police procedural set in the future.” It could be awesome, or it could be exceptionally lame, and initially I’m not really sure what to make of the idea which sounds like “Fringe” meets “CSI.”

Also, why base this on GATTACA at all? Can’t they just make a show that’s a police procedural in the future where genetic altering exists? Are they really going to bring back characters from the movie? It’s like Peter Berg’s BATTLESHIP or the ASTEROIDS movie which somehow needs to be based on the source material. Are naval warfare and space rocks copyrighted concepts?
