Genevieve O’Reilly to reprise Mon Mothma role for Rogue One prequel series

Disney's first stab at a live-action STAR WARS TV series resulted in The Mandalorian, a small-screen tale which more than a few fans actually preferred to the Skywalker Saga finale, THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. The next STAR WARS TV series will be a prequel to ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY which will focus on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), the Rebel Alliance intelligence officer who helped to steal the Death Star plans.

It was revealed today that Genevieve O'Reilly will be reprising her role of Mon Mothma, leader of the Rebel Alliance, in the ROGUE ONE prequel series. O'Reilly first played the role in REVENGE OF THE SITH, but was featured much more in ROGUE ONE. The actress also voiced Mon Mothma in several episodes of Star Wars: Rebels. In addition to Diego Luna and Genevieve O'Reilly, the ROGUE ONE prequel series will also star Alan Tudyk (Doom Patrol), Stellan Skarsgard (DUNE), Kyle Soller (THE TITAN), and Denise Gough (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt). Stephen Schiff was set up as the showrunner of the series, but he's since been replaced by Tony Gilroy, who will now write, direct, and serve as showrunner. Gilroy is no stranger to coming to the rescue of ROGUE ONE, as he previously stepped in to rewrite and help direct the ROGUE ONE reshoots.

The series has been described as a "rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire." In a statement released when the project was first announced, Diego Luna said:

Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.

In addition to the Cassian Andor series, we've also got the second season of The Mandalorian as well as an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor to look forward to as well. A release date for the ROGUE ONE prequel series has no yet been announced.
