GAME OF THRONES has a finite lifecycle as a TV series, but we still don’t know when it will end. The behind the scenes crew seems to think they will run for a handful of seasons which will adapt the novels published so far and may wrap up differently than the books of author George R.R. Martin doesn’t complete writing them in time. With Martin’s habit of leaving multiple years between novel publications, the odds are GAME OF THRONES will end as a series on television sooner than the books. But, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a big screen future for the acclaimed HBO series.
Speaking at the New York premiere of GAME OF THRONES upcoming season, Martin addressed the possibility directly.
“It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”
Martin also mentions that aside from wrapping up the series on the big screen, there have been active discussions about possibly adapting one of his prequel tales known as “The Tales of Dunk and Egg”. That could also provide a completely distinct franchise based on the fictional universe that could exist in feature form rather than TV.
HBO is no stranger to bringing their TV projects to film studios as both SEX AND THE CITY and ENTOURAGE have received movie adaptations. In both cases, Warner Bros released those movie as direct continuations of the concluded television series. This begs the question: would you rather see GAME OF THRONES conclude on the small screen and tell a separate story in cinemas or give us a big budget extravaganza to wrap up the tales of the Starks, Lannisters, and Targaryens?
