Nothing irks me more than when a studio releases a version of a movie one way on DVD, then decides to release a completely different version a few years later (or months later in some cases) as an attempt to get more money. Especially when they could have released it in its final version from day one. AVATAR is the perfect example of a barebones release that will no-doubt have a better release come this Holiday season. Shame-shame know your name!
But this isn’t really the case with RAMBO. Originally released on DVD a few months after it’s 2008 release in two separate editions (barebones or 2 disc special edition), the release was adequate and then some because of the option for a disc of extras or not. And now, some 2 years later, RAMBO is being released again on DVD and Blu-ray… but this time in an Extended Cut!
RAMBO: THE EXTENDED CUT will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on July 27, 2010 (just in time for THE EXPENDABLES). How extended is this thing, you ask? Check out the details below:
Plus, according to the kick-ass new packaging, the release will also include “a legend from THE EXPENDABLES.” I can’t tell if they mean it features Sly Stallone, the legendary actor as seen in THE EXPENDABLES, or if there’s some sort of character map / legend serving as a companion piece when you go check out THE EXPENDABLES. I guess we’ll have to pick this sucker up to find out!
Ok, so I am a little pissed about this double-dip. But only because I have to own this new release in its extended form. A lot can happen in 9 minutes. Those 9 minutes could have more bloody violence, more back story, more character development, and more overall awesomeness that I must own and see for myself. Even at the cost of picking up the same damn movie twice.
Check out the sweet new package art below (way better than the original art), and get ready to bring RAMBO home once again its Extended Cut on July 27, 2010.

Julie Benz in high definition!
