The folks over at The Keyhole have a nice interview up with director Jay Woelfel (UNSEEN, DEMONICUS), whose project GHOST LAKE is scheduled to hit DVD on June 13th. As you can already see, the poster is sweet! But what’s more interesting to me is hearing the guy’s take on low budget horror and independent filmmaking. Not eveyone has the ability to talk openly and honestly about the process without getting too technical. This interview succeeds nicely. Here’s a taste:
The last three features I did were “snake bit” by various snakes that I had no control over. I was working on Unseen and Demonicus at the same and both were hurt by lack of money and time when they really needed it. Unseen, which turned out to be the best of the three films, went on to make quite a bit of money and is currently playing on Showtime. Demonicus was really a “do what you can with it” job and was done so cheaply that it couldn’t help but make money and it did which lead to making Trancers 6 sort of as a reward for getting it done. Then Trancers 6 was messed over in pre and post production and the end result isn’t even a finished movie in my estimation.
Ghost Lake set out to have none of the problems that my last three films had, plus having the bonus of being entirely owned by myself and producer Johnnie Young and our Young Wolf Productions company. We had a larger (though not huge) budget than the previous films but I think what really counts is that the money and the time was spent to make it good rather than just get it done. I think that shows in a better film on every level.
It’s a lengthy interview, but well worth the read. You can check it out here. And you know I wouldn’t leave you without a fun pic from the flick, so check out one of the zombies below!
