To call Terry Gilliam Hollywood’s madman would be a misguided statement. The man is certainly mad, but considers himself opposed to the entire system and only uses it out of necessity, to get his (relatively) expensive films made. His last two films, filled with potential and imagination, THE BROTHERS GRIMM and TIDELAND were little-seen in theatres and devoured by critics. Then of course came his infamous attempt at shooting the ill-fated THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE with Johnny Depp, when the production fell apart after six days due to various catastrophes (the whole collapse was captured in the documentary LOST IN LA MANCHA).
Obviously Gilliam’s recent film past has been troubled and he needs his next film to erase the bad taste in many people’s mouths, and in a recent interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Gilliam claims his next project will be called THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS. Is that a Gilliam title or what? The basic outline goes a little something like this: “It’s set in a traveling show which has an attraction that allows patrons to go inside a man’s mind.” This of course, as with all of Gilliam’s films, is financing permitted. He also goes on to mention that he might try and reshoot QUIXOTE with Depp as well as Neil Gaiman’s GOOD OMENS. I personally hope, as I’m sure we all do, that Gilliam gets the support he needs to realize his unique visions. Most of us need hardcore drugs to see what Gilliam does when he blinks.
