Encore
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Murphy is taking a break from the dark nature of humanity to return to the family-friendly comedy of Glee. A revival of the musical series has been given a go from Disney+ and Hulu. The revival will come from 20th Century Television, who originally produced the show. There aren’t many details revealed yet, as the deals for the creative team are currently being negotiated, but it’s being assumed that Murphy will be back in some capacity.
This news also breaks as Murphy recently told THR in August, that he was considering a Glee revival and said, “For many, many people now in their 20s, they grew up on that show and it meant something to them. The music meant something. So, let’s kick it around and see what we get.” Then, in September, Murphy told Entertainment Tonight that he had just completed a script for a new version with co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.
The series followed the members of the show choir at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. The original cast included Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Dianna Agron, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz, Heather Morris, Naya Rivera, Mark Salling, Darren Criss, Harry Shum Jr., Jayma Mays, Dot-Marie Jones and Chord Overstreet. Then, actors like Alex Newell, Jacob Artist, Becca Tobin, Blake Jenner and Melissa Benoist joined the series in later seasons.
Glee
High school musicals became the rage after…well…High School Musical. Fox hit series Glee would capitalize on the genre in 2009. Throughout its six season, 121-episode run, Glee earned more than 30 Primetime Emmy nominations, nine Golden Globe nods and a handful of WGA and DGA nominations. Collectively, it garnered nearly 80 awards from the most notable academies and guilds. Despite its frequent corniness and bubblegum demeanor, Glee does deserve credit for tackling a number of hot-button–and important–issues for its target audience, including bullying, sexual orientation and more.
Are you excited by the revival news? Were you a Glee fan back in the day? Would you watch a new generation of kids or a reunion of the original cast?
