Goosebumps’ Rob Letterman to direct Detective Pikachu

Detective Pikachu Rob Letterman

After the world went absolutely bonkers for Pokémon Go, the mobile game which let players create an avatar which moved as you traveled through the real world searching for Pokémon, the race was on to scoop up the rights to make a live-action film and cash in on the craze. Legendary Pictures eventually came out on top and fast-tracked a live-action feature film for a 2017 production start. In order to make that date Legendary needed to put a director in place as soon as possible and it seems that the studio has made their choice.

Rob Letterman (GOOSEBUMPS) has been selected to direct DETECTIVE PIKACHU. The first film in the planned franchise will revolve around Detective Pikachu, a new character and story in the Pokémon universe which was first introduced in "Great Detective Pikachu." The game, which was released earlier this year in Japan, centers on a talking Pikachu who claims to be a great detective. After encountering a boy who is able to understand what he's saying, the pair begin working together in order to solve various Pokémon related mysteries in the city. It sounds like my True Detective/Pokémon fan-fiction will soon become a reality. All hail the Yellow Detective. DETECTIVE PIKACHU will be scripted by Nicole Perlman (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

So Poké-fans, what are your thoughts on the upcoming feature? Should DETECTIVE PIKACHU prove to be a success, what other Pokémon stories would you like to see brought to life in live-action?
