Graboids to be hunted in Thailand for Tremors: Island Fury

TREMORS franchise star Michael Gross let us know several months ago that he expected to start filming TREMORS 7 sometime this fall, and now Production Weekly has revealed some information on the new sequel that's in the works at Universal Home Entertainment – including the fact that it's going by the title TREMORS: ISLAND FURY.

The disappointing news for me is that TREMORS 5: BLOODLINES and TREMORS: A COLD DAY IN HELL director Don Michael Paul will be returning to the helm for this new film, since I didn't feel that his two TREMORS movies lived up to the four that preceded them. However, there is some promising news in that TREMORS 3, 5, and 6 writer John Whelpley is not back for this one. Instead, the screenplay has been written by new-to-the-franchise Brian Brightly.

The story Brightly has crafted sounds quite interesting, too. I imagine he was inspired by the images we're seeing all the time of wealthy people posing with the animals they've killed on safari, animals like Cecil the Lion, when he came up with this:

The deadly Graboids are back, illegally brought in to a new island resort by a rich playboy looking for a trophy hunt.

The Production Weekly description doesn't reveal how Gross's character Burt Gummer is going to get mixed up in all that, but I'm sure Burt wouldn't approve of people trafficking Graboids.

I still wish Universal would bring Stampede Entertainment, the people who made the first four movies (and the short-lived 2003 TV show), back on board these projects, but at least this one sounds intriguing so far.

TREMORS: ISLAND FURY may begin filming in Thailand this November.
