When the news first dropped back in November that Guillermo del Toro was developing a sort of “supernatural AVENGERS project” based around DC’s darker heroes, many thought it was just a rumor.

Whether it ends up actually happening or not, I can tell you this much: it’s no rumor.

It’s currently being developed with the title DARK UNIVERSE (as opposed to the originally-rumored HEAVEN SENT), an unnamed writer has been hired to work with Guillermo to pen a first draft, and the names floated for the anti-heroic line-up include John Constantine, The Spectre, Swamp Thing (pictured respectively above), Deadman, The Demon, and the pair of Zatara and Zatanna (pictured respectively below minus Zatara).

“I’m working on it,” said del Toro. “I’m writing the outline and we’re already in talks with a writer. A very, very good writer. People are probably going to be happy with who we have chosen. He accepted. I’ve been courting this writer, who I think is the perfect guy for this job. We’re doing it. Hopefully it will happen… The movement for this happened before [The Avengers].  They were already galvanized to launch ‘Justice League’ and they were galvanized to make their universe cohesive… They are really, really, with ‘Superman’, very, very confident with what they have. They are now feeling they have two pillars. Batman and Superman… There’s a foundation that now they can build on.”

We’ve been blue-balled/lady blue-balled before with AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, so even if the draft is brilliant and the rights are secured and the designs are stunning and everything comes together there’s still no promise that something of this scope would survive all the way until Day 1 of shooting.

But it’s real, it’s in the works, and I have all the hope in the world that we’ll see it come to dark life someday.  We all know Guillermo has a thousand and one things in the works, but considering his very public passion for these heroes I find it all too easy to imagine how he’d drop most any other opportunity to manifest this story and bring these uncommon men/women/other things together for all to see.
