Guillermo del Toro to direct Octavia Spencer in supernatural Cold War drama

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

When Guillermo del Toro elected not to return to the directors chair for PACIFIC RIM 2, we were left wondering just what project del Toro would take on next. Thankfully we didn't have long to wait as Variety has reported that Octavia Spencer (SNOWPIERCER) is currently in talks to join Guillermo del Toro's next film, which will be a "mysterious and magical journey set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963 with an otherworldly love story at the center of it." Like most things del Toro touches, I'm already intrigued.

The as-yet-untitled film will be written, produced, and directed by Guillermo del Toro, who says that the project is shaping up nicely and that production on the film should kick off in mid-August. Guillermo del Toro has been talking about taking on a smaller project for some time, and it appears that this is it. With the the shoot only a few months away, I suspect that we'll be hearing much more about del Toro's supernatural Cold War drama soon.

We all know that Guillermo del Toro likes to attach himself to projects, but unfortunately we also know that there's no guarantee that he'll actually complete them. Once this Cold War film wraps up, one of Guillermo del Toro's next possible projects is a remake of FANTASTIC VOYAGE for Twentieth Century Fox. Octavia Spencer will next be seen in THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT which opens March 18, 2016. Why, that's tomorrow! You can check out a review of ALLEGIANT by our own Chris Bumbray right here.
