Harry Potter fans have a lot to look forward to with the spin-off, FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM, hitting next year, but it looks like a direct sequel to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is also coming . . . in stage-play format. J.K. Rowling is working with theater collaborators John Tiffany and Jack Thorne on a story that takes place 19 years after “Deathly Hallows.” Entitled “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”, the story will revolve around both an adult Harry Potter and his youngest son, Albus.
The project summary reads as follows:
It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
It’s obvious that J.K. Rowling has a lot of passion for the Potter-verse and wants to continue to tell stories within it, but why on Earth she wouldn’t just write a new book involving the adventures of Potter’s kids is beyond me. A stage play doesn’t initially feel like much of a home for Potter stories, but I have to give credit where it’s due and say that some of the more fascinating aspects of that saga are usually the characters and how they interact with each other. Here’s hoping a taping of this show is in order, at the very least.
Preview performances of Cursed Child will begin at the Palace Theater on June 7, 2016 with an opening following on July 30, 2016.
