Update: HBO gives J.J. Abrams’ Demimonde a straight-to-series order

Update: It seems that HBO has emerged as the winner as they've snagged up J.J. Abrams' Demimonde and given it a series order. Abrams will write and executive produce, but it's expected that a showrunner will be brought in to oversee the series.

Although it seems like J.J. Abrams has a finger is just about everything, it's been some time since his last outing as the creator/writer of a TV series, but THR reports that Abrams is currently shopping around a space-set spec script which would mark his return to television in a more major creative role.

The ambitious new series, which TVLine claims is titled Demimonde, is "about a family — consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter — who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up transporting to another land amid a world's battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world." Certainly sounds interesting, and there will no doubt be plenty of opportunities for Abrams to drop a few mystery boxes in as well. THR's sources say that Apple and HBO are both in a heated bidding war for the project, although producers state that they are still open to additional bidders.

The series will likely find a home before too long, but I'd imagine that J.J. Abrams will be far too busy getting STAR WARS: EPISODE IX off the ground to devote much time to it beyond the initial script. The final installment of the STAR WARS sequel trilogy will hit theaters on December 20, 2019.

Demimonde isn't the only television project J.J. Abrams is working on, as he also serves as executive producer on HBO's Westworld and Hulu's upcoming Castle Rock, a Stephen King anthology series which will combine "the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland." Both Castle Rock and the second season of Westworld are expected to debut later this year.
