Henry Cavill’s Highlander remake is closer than ever to actually getting made

Highlander, remake, Chad Stahelski

Hollywood has been trying to get a Highlander remake off the ground for years, but that’s proven to be easier said than done. John Wick director Chad Stahelski was tapped to direct the project back in 2016, and he’s been working to bring the mythology of the immortals to life for a new generation every since.

There have been a few instances where it seemed like the Highlander remake was moving forward, only for it to stall, but Chad Stahelski told Collider that they’re now closer than they’ve ever been.

We’re in the process of tweaking right now. I think we know what we want. More importantly than anything, we know what we want to make. It’s in the creatives. We know what we’re trying to make. It’s just a matter of getting it to the point where we feel, “Okay, this is it. Let’s go.” But we’re closer than we’ve ever been, so that’s good.

Henry Cavill signed on to star in the Highlander remake last year, but the actor is also incredibly busy. Given how long it’s taken to get the project started, Cavill may no longer be involved, but Chad Stahelski confirmed that he’s been discussing the project with the actor and thinks he’ll bring “something very special” to the world of Highlander. Over the years, the Highlander remake has evolved, with Chad Stahelski envisioning a trilogy of movies and even considering transforming it into a TV series. Whatever happens, it’s clear he’s passionate about the story and doesn’t want to ruin it for fans. “We’re trying to really lay out this universe and not f— it up to the point where you cannot continue this story,” Stahelski said several years ago. “We love it so much, we’re trying to treat it with a lot of care.

The original Highlander movie starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a 16th-century Scottish warrior who discovers he’s immortal. After being mentored by a fellow immortal (Sean Connery), MacLeod learns they can be killed by beheading and that immortals throughout time have waged a secret war to become the last one standing to claim the Prize, the collected power of all immortals who ever lived. What do you hope to see from the Highlander remake?
