W Magazine has an article in their new issue that is ostensibly about the Sony’s GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO adaptation but is really about David Fincher and his career thus far. Not that I’m complaining, it’s a good – if too brief –read. But what we’re here to chew over right now is our first clear look at Rooney Mara in her Lisbeth Salander garb. The heroine of Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium Trilogy” is an unconventional one, and Mara seems to inhabit her quite well in these revealing pictures.
This is a nice change of pace for Mara, who bored us all to tears (while looking completely bored herself) in the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake. She’s got a supporting role in Fincher’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK and is decent in it, but I think the sting of her awfulness in the NIGHTMARE remake left me feeling cold toward her, even as she effectively told Mark Zuckerberg what an asshole he is. That said, I’m willing to believe – with this wicked source material and Fincher guiding her – that she’s capable of changing my mind about her.
About that source material… I have not read the book, nor have I seen the movies, but I’ve heard the violence and deviance within the tales is not to be trifled with. Take this little passage from the W Magazine article: This is shocking material for a major studio like Sony. In one of the pivotal scenes, taken directly from Larsson, Salander punishes the man who raped her by raping him with a large prosthetic penis, and then tattooing his torso with the words i am a rapist pig. Holy shit.
