Was TRON: LEGACY really that bad?!?
If not financially, certainly critically, and it seems director Joseph Kosinski’s taking the heat. After months of setting up his follow-up sci-fi film at Disney, the studio has wielded the axe on HORIZONS (formerly known as, and appropriately now referred to as OBLIVION). A strange decision considering we heard just this month that Karl Gajdusek had been tapped to do some rewrites on the script.
But as Variety states, Disney is allowing Kosinski and Radical Publishing to shop the script around town to see if other studios are interested.
HORIZONS centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.
No word on the exact reason for Disney’s sudden balk, but it could have to do with what I mentioned above, or simply that the material is a bit too dark for Disney to cross-market with action figures and theme park attractions. Or maybe they think, with all the upcoming alien movies, by the time HORIZONS would come out, audience interest could wane to nothing.
More on HORIZONS as it settles…
