Chiller begins production on original series Slasher

Today, Chiller TV began production on an original psychological thriller series titled Slasher, an eight episode, one-hour show from Shaftesbury that will also air on Super Channel in Canada. Chiller's first original series, Slasher is joining the ranks of contemporary shows like Scream: The TV Series and Scream Queens that are bringing the retro genre to the small screen.

In Slasher:

Katie McGrath (recently seen getting terrorized by pterosaurs in Jurassic World) will star as Sarah Bennett, a young woman who returns to the small town where she was born, only to find herself the centerpiece in a series of horrifying copycat murders based on the widely known, grisly killings of her parents. As the murders escalate, long-buried secrets are revealed, making everyone around her a suspect…or a victim.

Sarah finds herself questioning everything and everyone around her, including her husband Dylan (Brandon Jay McLaren, Graceland), her grandmother Brenda Merritt (Wendy Crewson, Revenge), family friend Cam Henry (Steve Byers, The Man in the High Castle) and the town’s police chief, Iain Vaughn (Dean McDermott, CSI).

This one sounds a little more serious than the other two series I mentioned, but any new reworking of the genre is welcome. The more we gnaw at the slashers and rework the formula, the more exciting and creative things we'll be seeing, and the better material we'll be getting down the line.

Slasher, which is written and created by Aaron Martin (Killjoys, Degrassi: The Next Generation), will be premiering in 2016.
