Dracula’s Damon Thomas to direct My Best Friend’s Exorcism

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

A little over a year ago, we heard that HAPPY DEATH DAY writer/director Christopher Landon would be producing an adaptation of Grady Hendrix's novel MY BEST FRIEND'S EXORCISM. At that time, there was some speculation that Landon could end up directing the film as well, but as development continues we now have confirmation that he has chosen to let someone else take the helm.

That someone else is Damon Thomas, a director who has been working exclusively in television for the last eighteen years. Thomas's credits include episodes of Penny Dreadful, Nightflyers, Killing Eve, and the recently released Dracula mini-series starring Claes Bang.

Thomas will be directing MY BEST FRIEND'S EXORCISM from a screenplay by Jenna Lamia. Set in 1988, Hendrix's novel centers on

the relationship of two best friends, Abby and Gretchen. After an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act more and more different, as Abby slowly comes to believe her friend has become demonically possessed. Both girls must soon face a tough question: is their friendship strong enough to beat the Devil?

The project is set up at Endeavor Content and Landon is producing with The Gotham Group and Quirk.

I haven't read MY BEST FRIEND'S EXORCISM, but my fellow news editor Mike Sprague has, and loved it. If you'd like to pick up a copy of the novel for yourself, you can do so at THIS LINK.

We'll keep you updated on the adaptation's progress as it makes its way toward production.
