Joel Kinnaman closes deal to play Robocop in the upcoming remake

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Last month we told you that MGM had officially made an offer to actor Joel Kinnaman to play Alex Murphy aka ROBOCOP in their upcoming remake. Well Deadline now confirms that the deal was made, and Kinnaman is a go for the flick.

He will join director Jose Padilha for the remake, based on a script by Josh Zetumer. With that trio rounded out, I am sure we shall hear more casting news soon. As this once dead project is now very much alive!

Kinnaman seems like a solid choice, he was in first season of AMC’s ‘The Killing’ and appeared in recent releases THE DARKEST HOUR and SAFE HOUSE. Will he be able to compare to the amazing performance of Peter Weller? I honestly doubt it, and I can’t see this remake reaching the heights of the original.

Original ROBOCOP synopsis: When a good cop gets blown away by some ruthless criminals, innovative scientists and doctors are able to piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called “Robocop.”Impervious to bullets and bombs, and equipped with high-tech weaponry, Robocop quickly makes a namefor himself by cleaning up the crime-ridden streets of violence-ravaged Detroit. But despite his new, hardened exterior, Robocop is tormented by scraps of memory of his former life, and relives vividnightmares of his own death at the hands of the vicious killers. Now he is out to seek more than justice…he wants revenge!
