Netflix snags Zack Snyder balls-to-the-wall zombie flick Army of the Dead

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Zack Snyder is one of those "love him or hate him" directors. I loved his version of Alan Moore's WATCHMEN and his take on DAWN OF THE DEAD… but have found his other films to be 'blah' at best. And that's all well and good as it seems that today we have word via THR that Snyder will be returning to the world of zombies with his next film ARMY OF THE DEAD. On top of directing ARMY OF THE DEAD, Snyder will also produce the movie with his wife, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller, based on a story by Snyder that was scripted by Joby Harold (AWAKE).

The adventure is set amid

A zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, during which a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

The zombie horror thriller was originally set up over at Warner Bros. back in 2007 (after 300 was a huge hit for the studio) but since then, the film has now moved into the hands of none other than Netflix, which is evidently letting Snyder go full-tilt boogie on this horror movie with Snyder saying:

There are no handcuffs on me at all with this one. I thought this was a good palate cleanser to really dig in with both hands and make something fun and epic and crazy and bonkers in the best possible way.

I love to honor canon and the works of art, but this is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself through a genre. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware — but not in a wink-to-the-camera way — balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose [like this].

I love big action, I love big sequences. My movie brain starts clicking around and I was like, ‘We need to be shooting this now!’ Constructing these sequences really fired me up. When the movie gets super big, you get pushed away from the camera. And in the last few years, I’ve had a reconnection with photography. This movie will be a chance to get the camera in hand.

Netflix and Zack Snyder's "balls-to-the-wall" zombie horror action movie ARMY OF THE DEAD is said to have a big budget in the neighborhood of $90 million and is all set to begin shooting this summer. How excited are you to see Snyder return to the world of zombies? Let us know below!
