Pacific Rim 2 enlists True Detective's Adria Arjona

Adria Arjona Pacific Rim 2 John Boyega

PACIFIC RIM 2 has just made another casting decision, and it's one that cements in a pattern that has been developing. The newest addition to the cast is Adria Arjona, who appeared as Emily in season 2 of True Detective. The trend that I've noticed is that the film is casting a lot of up-and-coming talent, but especially a lot of strangely young actors.

I understand that, say, Helen Mirren would be a hard sell on PACIFIC RIM 2. They're not getting A-list talent here. But the age skews way farther down than the original film, which starred the likes of Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. The average age seems to have shifted from the 30's down to the 20's, which leads me to believe that the nature of the plot might revolve around a new generation, or the rebirth of the Earth's culture. Maybe I'm just projecting, but it's something to consider.

Arjona can also be seen in Greg McLean's THE BELKO EXPERIMENT and the upcoming NBC series Emerald City, a retelling of THE WIZARD OF OZ in which she will star as Dorothy Gale. She joins a cast that includes Scot Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Levi Meaden, and John Boyega, who will play the son of Idris Elba's character in the original.

PACIFIC RIM 2 will be helmed by Daredevil season 1 showrunner Steven S. DeKnight, replacing original director del Toro, who remains on board as a producer. The script was penned by JURASSIC WORLD screenwriter Derek Connolly.

The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on February 23, 2018.
