Spawn relaunch by MacFarlane?

Okay I know that just yesterday I was bitching about remakes – but the truth is I’m all for it if the original flick in question sucked moose-nuts, or maybe was just plain-old misconceived. Take THE HULK for example. Interesting failure that it was (I’m one of the few that didn’t utterly loathe it), I have no problem with the powers that be “relaunching” the franchise, so they can get it right this time. (“relaunch” being the word used to avoid calling it a remake)

SPAWN is a flick in the moose-nut-sucking category. Terrific idea, with a character full of potential, that was made into an utterly atrocious motion picture – an ugly, nonstop annoyance that I would’ve laughed at if I hadn’t been so completely pummeled into slack-jawed horror and disgust.

Now, while celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the HBO-produced animated incarnation of SPAWN (has it been 10 freakin’ years already?!), creator Todd MacFarlane reveals that he’s in the process of not only providing a new animated series for the character, but a brand new movie as well – one that luckily has nothing to do with the first one. Apparently he will finance it himself (hey, all those MacFarlane toys bring in a pretty penny).

MacFarlane told Home Media Magazine: “I can make a spooky, suspenseful thriller that will scare the crap out of you.”

Sounds good to me. Come to think of it, John Leguizamo’s Clown character in the first film scared the crap out of me too, but for all the wrong reasons: It frightened me just how much I considered clawing out my own eyeballs whenever he was on screen.

SPAWN did have this going for it, though…
