Happy Monday readers, today ushers in a new week. Did you get a chance to catch a film in theaters this past weekend?
It would seem that audiences wanted to re-visit a classic with the re-release of Disney’s THE LION KING (in 3D) soaring to the top of the Box Office as it did way back in 1994. Does that prove that audiences are sick of the current crop, or is THE LION KING that great of a film? I’d say it is a bit of both, so what does that mean for our genre releases? Well CONTAGION dropped to the number two spot, taking in a decent amount and not seeing a massive drop.
I am happy to report that Nicholas Winding Refn’s DRIVE made it into the Top 5, with an amount that has almost recuperated its budget. The film has been one of the best reviewed so far this year, with the other well reviewed film WARRIOR seeing an unfortunate drop of 47%.
The other genre release STRAW DOGS (the remake of the Sam Peckinpah classic), made it to the number 5 spot. The film was sorely reviewed, (scope out Eric’s review here) and it barely made back half of its budget. I am honestly surprised it cracked the Top 5, it really did not seem like a mainstream audience film.
Next week sees the release of quite a few films, including KILLER ELITE, which stars AITH favourite Jason Statham, along with Clive Owen and Robert DeNiro. It will go up against the Taylor Lautner thriller ABDUCTION, we’ll see if the tween audience cares about his stock away from TWILIGHT.
