Hulu to launch a monthly $9.95 subscription service

Well, we knew it was coming, and it looks like it’s gonna happen a lot sooner than we may have thought. As soon as May 24th, the popular video-streaming website Hulu will begin testing a $9.95 monthly subscription service being called “Hulu Plus”.

The L.A. Times reports that under the new proposal, “Hulu would continue to provide for free the five most recent episodes of shows like Fox’s ‘Glee,’ ABC’s ‘Lost’ or NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But viewers who want to see additional episodes would pay $9.95 a month to access a more comprehensive selection.”

There are a few questions that arise from this. One for instance – Will paying 10 bucks a month allow me to watch shows without any commercial interruptions? One would hope so, but it’s not yet being made quite clear. The L.A. Times article does point out however that while currently Hulu does show periodic advertisements during video streams, they’re not equal to what we see during regular television. That’s expected to change as the online service begins adopting the same commercial loads as network television.

Head on over to the L.A. Times website for more info.
