I Want Your Sex
An erotically-charged drama starring Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman is capitalizing on its buzz from Sundance. I Want Your Sex from director Gregg Araki has been the talk of the previously held film festival. Our own Chris Bumbray was in attendance at a screening and glowed about it in his review, saying, “While the subject matter could have been heady, Araki, who’s always been fearless in his portrayal of sexual norms and matters of consent, has fun with the premise. A scathing satire of the way some Gen Zers seem utterly uncomfortable with the idea of sex, Araki’s movie takes no prisoners. But judging from the laughs at the Sundance premiere, rather than being put off, the young audience seemed to be with him right from the get-go.”

According to Deadline, the vehicle that marks the return of Olivia Wilde after Don’t Worry Darling (as well as a detour through television with The Studio) is getting snatched up by Magnolia Pictures. Deadline says that the film had a lot of suitors in the bid for its distribution, but Araki’s film decided to go home with Magnolia as a 7-figure deal in U.S. distribution rights hit the right spot. The films at this year’s Sundance are now looking at distribution deals as the last of the Park City offerings since the famous film festival will be relocating to Boulder, Colorado for future events. A deal is expected to be finalized today.
I Want Your Reaction
Gregg Araki is known for his work in New Queer Cinema and with his notoriety, the movie is expected to be pretty incendiary for some audiences. In his review, our editor-in-chief also said, “As with virtually everything Araki has ever made, I Want Your Sex is not for everyone, in that it deliberately pushes buttons in order to get a reaction. But it also feels like a movie many will get a kick out of, as there are some legitimately solid belly laughs sprinkled in. It’s also somewhat bold in how willing—and even eager—it is to offend certain sensibilities, and in that way it feels like a bit of a throwback to the more provocative early days of Sundance. My only complaint is how can you title a movie I Want Your Sex and not play the classic George Michael song? For shame!”
