Infinity War, Lost in Space lead Visual Effects Society nominations

There were plenty of visual effects extravaganzas at the theaters this year, but only a few had the quality effects worthy of some coveted awards. The Visual Effects Society announced their nominees for their 17th annual awards this morning, with movies from the folks at Disney leading the charge in a big way.

Leading the film nominees is none other than Marvel’s AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR with six nominations, including for the work done with Thanos (Josh Brolin) and the scenes on the planet Titan, with Netflix's LOST IN SPACE leading TV with six nominations. Following INFINITY WAR is READY PLAYER ONE with five nominations, and Disney’s CHRISTOPHER ROBIN and SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY earning several as well. On the animation front, INCREDIBLES 2 lead with five nominations, and SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE next with four.

Other movies that were noticeably absent were Oscar contenders BLACK PANTHER and MARY POPPINS RETURNS, both films receiving no nominations. PANTHER was thought to be a favorite to win an Oscar for its visuals, already picking up a Critics’ Choice on Sunday, so perhaps its not the clear frontrunner that people assumed.

Other movies like WELCOME TO MARWEN, AQUAMAN and more secured some nominations, and see the full list below.
