Issa Rae comedy Insecure ending with fifth season on HBO

HBO is bringing one of its critical darling series to an end. It has been announced that Insecure will end after its upcoming fifth season.

The critically-acclaimed comedy was renewed for a fifth season in May 2020 as Season 4 was just beginning to air on HBO. The fifth and final season is scheduled to begin production later this month and is set to debut later this year. Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, had this to say about the show ending:

"Issa has turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy. The show is as incisive as it is heartfelt, and it has resonated strongly with its audience because of the deeply personal work that Issa, Prentice, Melina, the cast and the writers have put into it. This talented team has conceived a brilliant final season for ‘Insecure’ and we look forward to having many more stories to tell with this singular group of collaborators."

Co-creator and star, Issa Rae also took a moment to thank HBO but most importantly the audience for going on this five-season journey with Insecure. Apparently, the series always had a five-season plan, and Rae, along with fellow executive producer Prentice Penny, is grateful that they'll get to finish the story as they see fit:

"Prentice (Penny) and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end. We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience. I feel blessed beyond measure to bring our characters’ stories to an end, on-screen at least."

Insecure was created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore and is partially based on Rae’s web series, Awkward Black Girl. The show follows the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern-day African-American woman (Rae) in Los Angeles. The series also stars Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales, and Alexander Hodge. The show has been a significant critical hit since its debut in 2016. The series averages a 96% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it has also received a plethora of award wins and nominations throughout its run. Rae herself has received an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations in the lead actress in a comedy category over the show's run.
