Issa Rae’s Insecure lands season five renewal at HBO

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Less than three weeks after its season four premiere, HBO has renewed the Issa Rae comedy Insecure for a fifth season.

Amy Gravitt, EVP Programming at HBO had this to say about bringing Insecure back for a fifth season:

“We’re thrilled that Issa, Prentice and the whole Insecure team will be getting back together for a fifth season. As we laugh and cringe with recognition, their stories make us all feel a little less alone in the world.”

Insecure was created by Rae & Larry Wilmore and follows Rae's character Issa Dee, who together with her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji), navigates the single experience in Los Angeles. For Season 4, Rae said that all the characters are leveling up and entering the next phase in life. Issa has quit her job and is on a new venture with her passion project of a block party while Molly is in her first relationship in a long time with “Asian BAE” Andrew (Alexander Hodge) and balancing her personal and work life. Lawrence (Jay Ellis) is thriving to level up on his own. The series also stars Yvonne Orji, Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, and Amanda Seales.

The season five renewal of Insecure further establishes the tie between Rae and HBO. In addition to that hit show, Rae is an executive producer of A Black Lady Sketch Show, which has been renewed for a second season, and she's developing a half-hour series about pro wrestling for the cable network called Tre Cnt with Dwayne Johnson. She's also set to star in and executive produce (alongside Laura Dern) The Dolls, a limited series about the riots over Cabbage Patch dolls in the early 1980s.

Issa Rae is steadily becoming one of my favorite comedic performers and Insecure only gets better with each season. Really stoked to see the show receive another season. Do YOU watch Insecure? Season four of Insecure is currently airing on HBO.
