While big-screen comedies seem to be a rarity these days, the genre is alive and well on the small screen. Speaking of small, one of the more interesting new shows debuting this month is about that very thing. The Miniature Wife, starring Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen, blends comedy, drama, and a bit of science fiction into a story about a married couple whose relationship struggles when one of them is shrunk to just 6 inches tall!
The series follows Les and Lindy Littlejohn, who have been married for two decades and are on the cusp of divorce. Lindy is a best-selling writer whose only novel won the Pulitzer Prize, yet she has written nothing since. Les is a brilliant scientist who has invented a miniaturization technology that could change the world. After a fight, Les inadvertently shrinks Lindy, then has to figure out how to make her big again. As the husband and wife devolve into trying to murder each other, we experience their problems from both a big and a small perspective.
I spoke with the cast and creators of the series to learn about their experience making The Miniature Wife. Zoe Lister-Jones discussed playing the antagonist Vivienne and whether she drew inspiration from her New Girl character, Fawn Moscato. O-T Fagbenle discussed the challenge of playing the perpetually upbeat Richie, while Sofia Rosinsky discussed playing the daughter of feuding parents. Showrunners Steve Turned and Jennifer Ames discussed their favorite props from the show and compared them to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Elizabeth Banks talked about her favorite part of playing a small character, Matthew Macfadyen about getting stabbed, and both stars about why the wedding episode is their favorite.
