Is Christopher Nolan really being courted to helm a Blade Runner prequel?

If you’ve listened to Christopher Nolan speak about his cinematic influences, he’s made no secret about being a Ridley Scott acolyte. But does that mean he’ll happily prequelize one of his fellow Englishman’s most venerated works? Tis’ the question my friends…

You see, in a few quotes given to io9, producer Andrew A. Kosove – who you may remember from an article we wrote two days ago – is now seeking high profile directors to potentially helm a BLADE RUNNER prequel. His first A-list wish? Mr. Chris Nolan.

Here’s what Kosove said:

“Our friend Christopher Nolan who we did Insomnia [with] would be the pie in the sky for us. To be clear I think what Christopher Nolan did – and to be clear, we cannot remake Blade Runner. As a legal matter, we have not bought the remake rights we have no interest in remaking it we can only do prequels or sequels. But I think the methodology that Christopher Nolan brought to Batman is precisely what we aspire to whomever the filmmaker is, whether Ridley Scott comes back and joins us or it’s someone else. It’s precisely what we aspire to with Blade Runner, that’s the template for us.”

Addressing his contact with Ridley about such a bold endeavor, Kosove added:

“The answer to that question is as follows. I’m going to answer it very briefly – we won’t say if we’ve reached out to Ridley Scott or not, but what we will say is that Ridley Scott’s blessing to what we’re doing is very important to Alcon. It’s important to Bud Yorkin, and certainly we have the greatest degree of respect to him as a filmmaker. He’s one of the greatest living directors and one of the greatest directors of all time. So of course he’s very important.”

Alright, I’ll open up the criticism. I in no way condone a BLADE RUNNER sequel or prequel, not now, not ever. But these decisions aren’t up to me, or any of us for that matter. So, if the BLADE RUNNER has to be tampered with, it should be done so in the capable hands of visionaries like Chris Nolan. Top flight directors or bust, that’s the way I look at it. Even then, it’s not guaranteed to work, just ask Gus Van Sant how PSYCHO turned out…

But what says you. If BLADE RUNNER must be resurrected, you like the idea of Nolan helming? If not, then who?
