Our man Rotten over at STYD has been tipped off that Lionsgate is interested in bringing CUBE back to the big screen, a project that seems perfect for the format de jure, 3D.
At this point, there’s been no confirmation about a CUBE 3D project, if it’s intended to be a full on remake, a reboot, or direct sequel to Vincenzo Natali’s 1997 claustrophobic mind f*ck. If it turns out to be a sequel, I’m willing to bet it picks up where Natali left off, not Andrzej Sekula’s mediocre 2002 follow up, CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE. Just a hunch…
In what can be linked as direct inspiration for the SAW franchise, CUBE followed 7 complete strangers of widely varying personality characteristics are involuntarily placed in an endless kafkaesque maze containing deadly traps.
Since showing great ingenuitywith CUBE on a shoestring budget (365,000 Canadian dollars), Natali has gone on to have quite a career, highlighted by a summer hit in SPLICE last year.
So what’s up, you diggin’ the idea of CUBE 3D? You think Natali should come back to the franchise in some capacity?
