DJANGO UNCHAINED shares a lot in common with INGLORIOUS BASTERDS aside from being sprung from the insane mind of Quentin Tarantino. Both deal with significant historical periods involving the subjugation of an entire minority group (The Jewish people in BASTERDS and African slaves in DJANGO UNCHAINED). Both films also feature the great Christoph Waltz in a major role. Even visually, the two films look closer in cinematic style than any other prior Tarantino films. Could this just be a new phase in the director’s career or was this intentional?
When asked recently about the possibility of these films being the first two parts of a trilogy, Tarantino had this to say: “I don’t know, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS and DJANGO UNCHAINED bespeak a trilogy,” Tarantino said. “As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don’t know what it is yet.”
MTV Movies Blog theorizes it could be a 1930’s gangster movie or a Cold War spy thriller. You could even go back and say KILL BILL was really the first chapter since it dealt in revenge and subjugation of women. But, on the other hand, KILL BILL is another entity entirely.
There are numerous sub-genres that Tarantino has not played with yet that could make a great final chapter to this thematic series. I personally would love to see him make something like OCEAN’S ELEVEN and gather all of the great actors from his prior movies and a classy 1960s era heist flick.
DJANGO UNCHAINED opens everywhere on Christmas Day.
