J.A. Bayona talks about using animatronics in Jurassic World 2

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

J.A. Bayona is receiving some serious accolades from critics regarding his work on A MONSTER CALLS (check out our review HERE), and that has everyone really excited for JURASSIC WORLD 2. We know that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return, but beyond that, plot details are being kept in the dark. If one of your complaints about JURASSIC WORLD was the use of CGI, then Bayona has you covered. He recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter regarding the importance of animatronics, and you can check out the quote below!

J.A. Bayona on using animatronics in JURASSIC WORLD 2:

Obviously you don’t have real dinosaurs – sometimes you have people playing dinosaurs — but we love animatronics and we’re trying to do as much with them as possible. It’s complicated because the audience now is so used to seeing CGI that they’re sometimes reluctant toward animatronics. But at the same time, I think animatronics bring soul and reality to it. We’re trying to find the balance between animatronics and CGI in order to cheat the audience so they don’t know what they’re seeing.

“Soul and reality” is a key term that I’m happy to see Bayona bring up, as that was the biggest thing that was missing from JURASSIC WORLD. It spent far too much pandering to the audience and trying to wow them with special effects. Now that we’re seemingly moving things out of the park, I’m curious to know how the story will progress. And if they want to bring back Jeff Goldblum…I wouldn’t hate that!

JURASSIC WORLD 2 opens in theaters on June 22, 2018.
