Jack Bauer headed to the bigscreen in upcoming 24 film?

Get ready for Jack Bauer and his f*ck-you-up antics. The popular high-concept television series is getting ready to explode onto the silver screen.

24, starring Kiefer Sutherland as no-holds-barred federal agent Jack Bauer, is currently in its 8th and presumably last season. Fox has not sketched out a deal for a 9th, though that decision might hinge on how the current week’s ratings stack up. The general consensus, though, seems to be that this will be it for the show on the small screen. However, star Kiefer Sutherland – who’s also an executive producer on the series – hopes the property could become a feature film franchise.

Writer Billy Ray (VOLCANO, SHATTERED GLASS, the WESTWORLD remake) has been brought on to hammer out the film’s script. Fox execs apparently went gaga over Ray’s pitch. The story would see Bauer bring his brand of terror control to Europe.

It’s no mystery why Fox would want to turn one of its hit shows into a movie. Apart from the ill-advised THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE (which opened six years after the “The X-Files” series went off the air and tanked at the box office), the first X-FILES film and especially THE SIMPSONS, did decent to great business respectively in the U.S. and even better overseas. Should a 24 film actually get made while the brand is still fresh in people’s minds, I suspect it too would do pretty well.
