It was revealed earlier this year that Amazon was negotiating a multi-billion dollar deal to purchase MGM, the home of James Bond. While this led to concerns that this would find No Time to Die debut on Amazon Prime, EON Productions stated that they “are committed to continuing to make James Bond films for the worldwide theatrical audience.” Another concern was that Amazon would expand the franchise with a variety of spinoffs, including a James Bond TV series, but that’s something longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are very much against.
While speaking with Total Film, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were asked if a James Bond TV series would be a no-go for them. “You got it,” Broccoli said. “We make films. We make films for the cinema. That’s what we do.“ Wilson added that they’ve “resisted that call for 60 years.” It’s important to note that Broccoli and Wilson still have creative control over all decisions regarding the secret agent, even with Amazon’s acquisition. Despite their assurance that a James Bond TV series isn’t in the cards, I probably wouldn’t bet against it happening at some point in the future. Getting back to No Time to Die, Daniel Craig’s final film as James Bond has been significantly delayed due to the pandemic, but the stage is set for the film to finally hit theaters, meaning that the producers will have to start considering who will play the next James Bond. “It’s tough to think about the future until this film has its moment,” Barbara Broccoli said “I think we just really want to celebrate this and celebrate Daniel, and then when the dust settles, then look at the landscape and figure out what the future is. Although I think one thing we’ve certainly learned in the last 18 months is you never know what the future is. So we have to sit down and think about it.” No Time to Die will hit theaters in the U.K. on September 30, 2021, followed by an October 8, 2021 release in the U.S.
