The Furious
The Furious may be the next Raid with the way audiences are responding to it. The film is a celebration of the golden age of Hong Kong action filmmaking, with authentic martial arts, hand-to-hand combat, and an international ensemble of elite fighters. Mo Tse stars as Wang Wei, a humble tradesman who is thrust into a deadly underworld of corruption and violence when his daughter Rainy is abducted. His only ally is Ravin (Joe Taslim), a relentless journalist haunted by his own past. Together, they fight their way through an international criminal network in a desperate bid to save Rainy and uncover the truth.
James Gunn gushes over The Furious
One big fan that the movie has made is director James Gunn. Gunn posted on his social media that he took the cast and crew of his next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, to see the film and everyone loved it. He also posted a panoramic photo of the whole party at the theater. Gunn wrote, “Oh boy! Just went with a bunch of #ManofTommorrow cast & crew to see #TheFurious. I didn’t think Kenji Tanagaki could outdo himself after the spectacular Walled In, but man The Furious really showed him as one of the best action filmmakers working. We all loved it!”
What we thought of The Furious
Our Chris Bumbray was lucky to catch the film early at the Toronto International Film Festival. He gave the movie 9 out of 10 and his impressions were, “In terms of action, director Kenji Tanigaki—best known as the fight choreographer behind SPL and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled City—delivers the goods in a huge way. His staging is dynamic and unrelentingly brutal. On top of that, the whole thing is propelled forward by a hard-driving soundtrack from Flying Lotus.
While The Furious lacks the slick polish of the best recent South Korean, Chinese, or Indonesian action blockbusters, it makes up for it in sheer adrenaline and crowd-pleasing ferocity. It’s the kind of movie designed for high-fives in the theatre, where you’ll find yourself grinning like an idiot as wave after wave of mayhem unfolds on screen. I had a killer time with it, and it feels like the kind of old-school action banger they used to churn out regularly during the heyday of Hong Kong action cinema.”
