We’re only a couple of weeks away from the next film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, Supergirl. Part of the franchise’s first slate of projects, dubbed Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, the film has a lot riding on it as it looks to expand the DCU by introducing Milly Alcock’s take on the iconic heroine. Regardless of whether Supergirl becomes a major hit, Alcock is already set to return to the big screen just over a year later in Man of Tomorrow, Gunn’s sequel to Superman, which sees David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprising the roles of Clark Kent / Superman and Lex Luthor.
While Superman was a solid success, grossing $618 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year, it didn’t quite reach the level of global phenomenon some had predicted. Even so, the film earned a healthy profit and proved there is still a strong appetite for the Man of Steel. As a result, Warner Bros. is moving quickly, with Man of Tomorrow scheduled for release on July 9, 2027—almost exactly two years after its predecessor.
In the new film, Superman is forced to reluctantly team up with his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor to face an even greater threat: Brainiac, who will be played by Lars Eidinger, recently acclaimed for his performance in the Cannes Film Festival entry Moulin (check out my review).
Although the movie is still thirteen months away from release, Gunn has shared the first official image from the set, revealing a heavily armoured Lex Luthor.
Returning Cast and New DCU Connections
Man of Tomorrow will also see the return of Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Ed Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.
In addition, Aaron Pierre is rumoured to appear as John Stewart following his debut in Lanterns. Milly Alcock is also expected to reprise her role as Supergirl, although it remains unclear whether her appearance will be limited to a cameo, as it was in Superman, or whether she will play a larger role in the story.
What Is Man of Tomorrow About?
The upcoming sequel follows Superman and Lex Luthor as they form an uneasy alliance to stop Brainiac, one of DC’s most powerful and intelligent villains. The film is expected to continue building the interconnected world of Gunn’s DCU while further developing key heroes introduced in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
