James Wan’s Malignant to release on HBO Max in September

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Director James Wan's Malignant, his new giallo-inspired film, is part of Warner Bros' plan to release all of their films to theatres and the HBO Max streaming service on the same day throughout 2021, and last week we saw the first imagery from the film thanks to an HBO Max promo (embedded above). Now we know when we'll be seeing the film: Wan and Warner Bros. have confirmed that Malignant's release date is September 10th.

Along with this announcement comes the unveiling of a new image, which can be seen below and shows a gloved hand holding a very fancy blade. The giallo vibe is stong with this one.

Wan promised that Malignant would be

hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets."

And the film has indeed been rated R, earning that rating for "strong horror violence and gruesome images, and language".

Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, Mckenna Grace, Jake Abel, George Young, Ingrid Bisu, Michole Briana White, and Jacqueline McKenzie star in the film. Wan wrote the screenplay with Akela Cooper and J.T. Petty after crafting the story with Bisu.
