Jeremy Renner WON’T be the new Snake Plissken in Escape From New York remake!

Well, that was quick!

Just last Friday we had a story out that put Jeremy Renner (right) in the mighty big ass-kickers of Kurt Russell…you know, as the new Snake Plissken in Breck Eisner’s ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK retooling. Well, forget all that noise Jack!

According to The Wrap (who in turn cites Deal Central), Renner has been quickly debunked as Plissken for a new generation. Word is he hasn’t even been officially offered the role. In fact, casting decisions for New Line are still a long ways away. Maybe they’ll dump the project altogether…that’d be nice!

Now, I was on record as backing Renner in the eye-patch. Not that I was head over heels, or even all that excited about it…but if Carpenter’s classic has to be retouched, I’m all for bringing in a dude who’s still relatively under the radar…can act extremely well, and has the physical attributes to handle the action sequences himself. Save for maybe the first quality, Renner certainly fits the bill.

Does it matter though? Not now. Maybe not ever. Renner is currently hard at work on MI IV: GHOST PROTOCOL, and I think we can all agree on wanting to see him in P.T. Anderson’s intriguing THE MASTER instead of an unnecessary remake.

Ain’t that right?

Renner’s AVENGERS co-star, Scarlett Johansson!
