To all us heshers, 4/20 is Earth Day. According to Jim Cameron, 4/22 is PANDORA day. Makes sense, right? Right?
Okay, so it doesn’t make much sense at all. Guess it doesn’t matter when you’re the self proclaimed “King of the World.” Either way, in lieu of this Thursday’s DVD and Blu-ray release of AVATAR, Cameron had a recent touchdown with the L.A. Times, and took the opportunity to discuss many related topics.
What stood out was the confirmation of a theatrical re-release of the movie this August, replete with an additional 6 minutes of footage spliced into the original cut. So we all have that to look forward to. But even more interesting (IMO) is the subject matter Cameron and crew will anchor the AVATAR sequel with. You ready for this…Pandora’s Ocean!
When quizzed about the technological challenges the time constraints of the sequel might inflict, Cameron answered:
“We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it:
Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”
Quite a bold undertaking if you ask me. It seems the most sense for a comparatively rushed production might be to focus on the things that worked best in the original and extrapolate out. To create an entire ocean of Pandora, given all the exhaustive detail that goes into everything from flora and fauna, to language, to character…could be mad overwhelming. Of course, PANDORA 2 is slated for a 2014 release, so that ought to give Jimmy Cam and team some time hash it all out (hash, 4/20, see what I did there!)
But what says all you cats? You in favor of an underwater AVATAR sequel? In 3D no less?
Shed some blood below!
I Wonder how Zoe Saldana will look underwater!
