Now that the press has begun for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, we will surely be getting tons of little nuggets of information from J.J. Abrams about STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. How much he will share with us remains to be seen, but at a recent German press conference for TREK, Abrams did give some concrete news on the music that will be used in EPISODE VII.
When asked about the score, Abrams let this slip:
“For ‘Star Wars,’ it’s every early days to know, but I believe that going forward, John Williams will be [scoring] that film,” he said, jokingly adding: “Because, apparently, he was there long before I was.”
Abrams longtime scoring partner has been Michael Giacchino, who many look at as the heir apparent to John Williams. Giacchino has turned in some varied and amazing music for STAR TREK, THE INCREDIBLES, RATATOUILLE, SUPER 8, UP, and will be working on Brad Bird‘s TOMORROWLAND and the Wachowski’s JUPITER ASCENDING. Keeping Williams involved proves that Disney truly doesn’t want to alienate fans of the classic films, which was also apparent in their desire for poster artist Drew Struzan to return as well.
With just two years until the 2015 date Disney is promising for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, there may not be much time to lose. As long as John Williams wants to come back, I say have him back. Hopefully he will give us something truly memorable to add to his vast library of iconic music.
