Fresh off scooping The Ultimate Scream award (akin to Best Picture at the 2009 Spike Scream Awards) and only a few months after raking in nearly $260 million dollars worldwide, high-concept wunderkind J.J. Abrams has sat down with MTV to shoot the shit about the sequel to his mega-popular retooling of STAR TREK.
Although he keeps mum on intricate plot detailing (out of necessity these days), Abrams seems satisfied with his first adaptive foray, musing:
“The first one did what it was required to do, which was bring the family together and reset,” He adds “It was a bridge, no pun intended, between what came before, what the ‘Star Trek’ people knew and the ‘Star Trek’ of now. And that was the heavy lifting of the first film.”
Abrams then goes on to inform of his desire to, aside from offer a kickass action spectacle, have some laden social relevance in the script:
“The second one has an obligation to go deeper and maintain the fun and adventure in the sense of optimism and scale that [‘Trek’ originator Gene] Roddenberry created. But I do think it has to evolve and not become some polemic over-the-top, on-the-nose allegory. It needs to be something that is not just about the characters meeting each other and having their first adventure; it needs to be about having their most meaningful one.”
Subtlety in a STAR TREK flick? Sure.
Finally, Abrams promises his sequel won’t be saddled with the rote #2 in its titles, citing even the first TREK sequel back in 1982 didn’t even sink so low (STAR TREK: THE WRATH OF KHAN).
