JoBlo.com previews this week’s new releases: May 13, 2011

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

At JoBlo.com, we feel it’s our duty to keep you informed and satisfied. You want to know what your big choices are at the theater each weekend, and we’re happy to reach out and give you the full release.

PRIEST

Who’s In It? Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Karl Urban, Christopher Plummer, Maggie Q, Lily Collins, Stephen Moyer, Brad Dourif

Who Made It? Directed by Scott Stewart (Screen Gems)

What Is It? A gunslinging holy man (Bettany) rides the futuristic dusty trail with a young half-vampire sheriff (Gigandet) and a kickass priestess (Maggie Q) to track down a gang of fanged bandits led by the self-descriptive “Black Hat”, a former colleague of the titular priest who’s now leading the bloodsucker baddies. Weapons and random objects are hurled at viewers’ eyes courtesy of 3D post-conversion.

How’s It Look From Here? PRIEST assembles an interesting cast… which really didn’t do much to help LEGION, the last movie from director Stewart (that one also had Bettany as a pistol-packing holy man — er, angel). And it’s based on a graphic novel nobody is familiar with, seems to resemble a RESIDENT EVIL spinoff, and faces the growing backlash of inferior 3D.

Still, if you’re looking for some post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror western action, this is definitely your best bet this weekend. As long as you like it PG-13.

BRIDESMAIDS

Who’s In It? Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Terry Crews, Chris O’Dowd, Ellie Kemper, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Melissa McCarthy, Matt Lucas, Jill Clayburgh, Rebel Wilson, Michael Hitchcock

Who Made It? Directed by Paul Feig (Universal)

What Is It? Broke Annie (Wiig) hates her job and her love life, and finds even further complications when she becomes her engaged bestie’s maid of honor. Clueless and overwhelmed by the duties of organizing parties, showers and debauchery, Annie uses her powers of persuasion and BS to make her friend’s pre-wedding as amusing as possible for audiences.

How’s It Look From Here? Could this be the summer’s breakout comedy? Raunchy R-rated Apatow-produced humor may certainly be an attractive option to the boys’ lost weekend in THE HANGOVER PART II, which seems an awful lot like a rerun of THE HANGOVER part one.

Wiig is SNL’s current MVP, which doesn’t necessarily translate to theaters (ask Julia Sweeney or Molly Shannon). But with wedding season arriving right along with weekend blockbusters, all the ladies out there might want something more relatable than giant robots and spandexed superheroes, and will make their dollars heard loud and clear.

OUTLOOK

The guys and girls will almost definitely be heading into different theaters at the cineplex this weekend… unless they both skip the new offerings completely to check out Marvel’s Thunder God.
